IndigiNews Editorial Policy

IndigiNews is committed to the creation of Indigenous-centred journalism grounded in cultural care, integrity, accountability and community respect. We strive to build and maintain trust with communities, sources, and the public through transparent, ethical journalism.

  1. We are editorially independent
    • IndigiNews maintains a strict firewall between editorial decision-making and funding, advertising, sponsorships, or donor priorities.
    • Donations, grants, or partnerships shall not grant funders the right to review, influence, or veto editorial content. All editorial decisions rest with our editorial staff.
    • Where a potential conflict arises (e.g. with institutional funders or community partners), editors must document and explain how editorial independence was preserved.
  2. We commit to fairness and accuracy
    • Every factual element in a story (dates, names, statistics, events) must be verified. In the case of uncertainty, editors must flag caveats or indicate limitations.
    • Our reporters will take care to present perspectives fairly, avoid distortions, and provide relevant context in each story.
    • Mistakes will be acknowledged transparently and corrected promptly. Corrections include an editorial note that describes what was changed and why.
    • People, organizations, or institutions within our reporting will be given a reasonable opportunity to respond prior to publication.
  3. We will protect our sources
    • Our reporters will inform sources of the nature, purpose, and potential consequences of the interview and/or how their words will be used.
    • Extra care is required when interviewing or portraying survivors, children, Elders, or people in trauma or crisis.
    • Consent should be carefully obtained, explained, and often revisited.
    • Stories should avoid causing unnecessary harm, sensationalizing trauma, or retraumatizing sources.
